Emails. Chats. LinkedIn posts. AI can now write all your communications, if you so choose. But that doesn’t mean it should.
Don’t get me wrong—AI is an incredible tool for getting started, organizing ideas, and saving time. But when it comes to communicating with your employees, there is still no substitute for your own voice.
In insurance, relationships have always mattered. We ask our employees to build trust with clients, support policyholders during difficult moments, and collaborate with colleagues across departments. As leaders, we should hold ourselves to that same standard in the way we communicate internally.
Employees can tell the difference between a message that’s simply well written and one that’s genuinely heartfelt. They want to know there’s a real person behind the email—someone who understands the pressures they’re facing, appreciates their efforts, and is willing to be honest when times are challenging.
That’s especially important today. Change is happening fast. AI is reshaping how we work. Expectations continue to evolve. According to a recent Korn Ferry article, emotional intelligence and empathy remain essential leadership skills because trust—not technology—is what ultimately strengthens organizations. AI can help us communicate more efficiently, but it can’t create authentic human connection on our behalf.
My advice? Write the way you actually speak. Add the story about a customer whose life was made easier because of your team’s work. Mention the employee who went above and beyond. Acknowledge the challenges everyone has been navigating.
Those personal touches don’t just make communications more interesting—they remind employees that they’re working alongside real people, not processing machines.
The organizations that thrive in the years ahead won’t simply be the ones that adopt AI the fastest. They’ll be the ones that use technology to become more efficient without sacrificing the empathy, authenticity, and trust that have always defined great leadership.
Because long after employees have deleted your email, they’ll remember how it made them feel.
How are you balancing AI-powered efficiency with authentic leadership?
